Transient students and singles come and go, but a strong core of long-time residents still anchors in Kitsilano ('Kits' to the locals), one of the city's liveliest and most desirable established neighbourhoods. Overlooking the classic Vancouver skyline of sea, Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains from Cornwall Street, this area was once the counter-culture capital of the region and is now home to many of those hippies who grew up to enter middle-management. It's now a comfortable, liberal paradise of well-heeled vegetarians.

Kitsilano Beach, Vanier Park (home to both the Vancouver Children's Festival and the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival), as well as Vancouver's largest outdoor pool are big summer draws.

Vanier park is also home to the Vancouver Museum, the Maritime Museum and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre.

Fourth Avenue is the major shopping thoroughfare, combining the area's hippie and yuppie roots with a range of great independent stores to browse and eclectic coffee shops to while away a rainy afternoon. Broadway runs parallel to the area's southern edge, offering mainstream chain stores, restaurants and fast-food joints.
