Oh, Canada
For more than 25 years at noon each day, a set of horns atop a
downtown Vancouver building played the first four notes of Canada's national
anthem, O' Canada. The 10 aluminium horns were so powerful they can be heard
over much of the city, and those nearby had to plug their ears. When the
building converted to a condominium in the mid-90s, the horns were moved to the
top of the luxury Pan Pacific Hotel near Canada Place.

Burrard
Street Bridge
The Burrard Street Bridge was the built
in 1932 and in true BC style the vision was to have it integrated with the
natural landscape. The concrete pillars were built twice as large to emulate
mountains. Having the concrete piers meet the steel railings was meant to be
symbolic of the natural world coming together with a man-made world. The steel
railings underneath the bridge were actually built to be a railway crossing,
however, the project was never finished because the Great Depression set in and
the province rejected the plan.
